Gun attack at a church in Hamburg: Several people killed or seriously injured
Several people have been killed or seriously injured in an attack on a church in the northern German city of Hamburg, with the motive for the attack unclear, police said, as quoted by Reuters.
Shots were fired at a Jehovah's Witnesses church. There are serious injuries in the attack. Police have not yet provided firm information on the number of casualties. The most recent local media reports indicate eight deaths - seven victims and the perpetrator of the attack, who is believed to have committed suicide.
"It's not 100% clear yet, but we can assume so," police spokesman Holger Vehren told N-TV news. Similarly, existing clues reveal that the attacker may have acted alone.
"We found a deceased person in a community centre in Groß Borstel, who we assume could be a perpetrator. In order to exclude the involvement of other perpetrators, we are carrying out extensive checks and searches," the local police initially tweeted.
The motive for the attack at the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall remains unclear for now. Police are inclined to credit the hypothesis of an "act of madness".
