Laver Cup: Team Europe leads 3-1 after day one of competition

Team Europe has made a strong start to this year's Laver Cup, held in San Francisco. Norway's Casper Ruud, Czech Jakub Mensik and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz helped the side to a 3-1 lead over Team World after the first day's play.

In the opening match, Ruud beat American Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-6.

Czech Jakub Mensik then overcame another American, Alex Michelsen, 6-1, 6-7, 10-8. Team World secured their first victory when Brazil's Joao Fonseca overcame Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 6-3. In the doubles, however, Alcaraz and Mensik were the superior pair, beating the American duo of Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen 7-6, 6-4.

The team tournament has been held annually since 2017. Team Europe have won the trophy on five occasions, while Team World has claimed it twice.
