Moldovan-made Japanese desserts wow EU consumers

Japanese desserts produced in the Republic of Moldova and exported to the European Union are the result of entrepreneurs inspired by mochi, a traditional Japanese cake. This dessert has been adapted; the sweet red bean paste typically used by Japanese chefs has been replaced with a fine cream, specifically a combination of mousse and ice cream.

In 2015, a group of entrepreneurs from Chisinau introduced a new concept to the local market: the Japanese dessert mochi. Initially sold in Chisinau, these cakes soon gained popularity among customers in several European Union countries.

“The first country we exported to was Romania. Currently, we export to five European countries: Romania, Spain, France, the Czech Republic, and another strong partner. The first reaction from European consumers was ‘Wow.’ Our product, being innovative, demonstrates that other products can be produced in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Ivan Sîrbu, the company’s administrator.

A key factor in the company's success has been its ability to adapt to local tastes. While in Japan, mochi traditionally features a bean paste filling, in Europe, it is distinguished by delicate creams that combine elements of mousse and ice cream. Today, the assortment includes over 30 flavors.

To enter the European market, the company adhered to strict food safety regulations.

“First of all, these regulations inspire us to prioritize trust and fairness regarding food safety and production methods. This compliance allows us to compete effectively. I believe this is a source of pride for both our company and our country,” explained Iulian Bulat, the head of production.

The European Union is the Republic of Moldova's primary trading partner, with three out of every four Moldovan products exported to this market.
