Hundreds of psychotropic pills found in travelers’ luggage at border

Border police and customs officers discovered hundreds of psychotropic pills in the luggage of several foreign citizens attempting to illegally import or export them from the Republic of Moldova. Over the past week, a total of five such attempts were documented, according to the General Inspectorate of Border Police.
Cases were reported at various border crossing points involving individuals with prohibited substances.
In Ocnița, a 34-year-old American citizen was found with 37 psychotropic pills of various types concealed in his luggage. Meanwhile, in Costești, a 45-year-old Israeli citizen was caught with 17 pills.
In Otaci, authorities apprehended a 45-year-old British citizen with 10 pills and a tube containing other prohibited substances. Additionally, a 31-year-old Israeli was discovered with a box containing 12 pills.
Also in Otaci, a canine team detected 179 psychotropic pills in the luggage of a 33-year-old American citizen.
According to the General Inspectorate of the Border Police, all the pills are classified as prohibited narcotics and psychotropic drugs.
The substances were seized and sent for examination. Based on the results, measures will be taken in accordance with the law.
The Border Police stated that individuals crossing the border may only bring medications necessary for their treatment during the journey. For medicines that contain psychotropic or narcotic substances, travellers must have a medical prescription that specifies the name of the medications, the method of administration, and the duration of treatment.
Transporting psychotropic medications without proper medical documentation is considered smuggling and can result in a prison sentence of up to eight years. Examples of such medications include Modafinil, Alprazolam, and Tramadol.
