Two investigators convicted of influence peddling
Two investigation officers were fined 150,000 lei each and banned from holding public office for five years after being found guilty of influence peddling.
Anti-corruption prosecutors demonstrated at the Chisinau Court based in Buiucani, that two individuals demanded and received a bribe of 20,000 lei from a citizen involved in a criminal case concerning blackmail.
The incident occurred in December 2021 when the two defendants were serving as investigation officers within the Chisinau Municipality Police Department of the General Police Inspectorate. The court delivered its verdict on September 22, nearly four years after the crime was committed.
In exchange for the money, the defendants allegedly claimed that they could influence a colleague managing the case, ensuring that he would not be held criminally liable and would be retained as a witness, as prosecutors detailed.
The bribe was transferred under the supervision of the criminal investigation body and officers from the Internal Protection and Anti-Corruption Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
During the proceedings, the defendants pleaded not guilty.
The sentence is not final and may be appealed to the Central Court of Appeal within 15 days.
