A man drove a vehicle through the front doors of a church in Michigan and shot at least 10 people, killing one, local police announced on Sunday.

International news agencies AFP, Reuters, and EFE reported the news, cited by Agerpres.

The attack took place in the city of Grand Blanc, about 97km (60 miles) north-west of Detroit, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is informally known as the Mormon Church.

Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renye said the gunman exited his vehicle and fired an assault weapon. He added that hundreds of people were inside the church, which caught fire when the vehicle crashed into it.

Authorities believe there may be further casualties.

The police did not immediately name the suspect, who died at the scene in a shootout with two officers who were rushed to the scene, Chief Renye said.

Renye described him as a man aged 40 from Burton, Michigan. No further details were immediately available.

National officials, including US Attorney General Pam Bondi and President Donald Trump, posted they had been briefed on the attack.

In a post on his Truth Social network, Mr Trump said the shootings "appear to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the US," and noted the FBI was on the scene.
