Moldova elections: PAS win 'accelerates' EU accession bid, says Mureșan

The result of the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova will accelerate the country’s European Union accession process, according to Romanian Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Siegfried Mureșan.

In a post on his Facebook page, he highlighted the progress made in the last four years and reiterated the EU's continued support for Moldova's European integration efforts.

The MEP said the pro-European government led by the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) and President Maia Sandu has achieved “remarkable progress” through reforms, the start of accession negotiations, and the consolidation of trust among European and international partners.

"Now we have another four years of pro-European governance, during which we can further accelerate the EU accession process," Mureșan declared.

He added that Moldova will also benefit from an accelerated absorption of European funds from the €1.9 billion Growth Plan, earmarked for modernising the country, bringing it closer to European standards, and raising citizens' living standards.

The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) secured 50.03% of the vote in the parliamentary elections on September 28, according to preliminary results presented by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) after data from 99.52% of the tally sheets were centralised. In the new Parliament, the party is expected to hold 55 seats, giving it the ability to govern the country without a coalition for the next four years.

Second place went to the Patriotic Electoral Bloc with 24.26% of the vote (26 seats), followed by the "Alternativa" Electoral Bloc at 7.99% (8 seats). "Our Party" and the "Democracy at Home" Party won 6.21% and 5.63% respectively (six seats each).

The scores of the other contenders are below the electoral threshold.
