Moldova: Pro-EU PAS party wins new parliamentary majority amid Russia tensions

Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu suggests that the result of the 28 September parliamentary election in the Republic of Moldova may have shown Russian leader Vladimir Putin the power of the vote.

Mr Băsescu wrote on his Facebook page: “A weapon that does not kill! September 28, 2025: the day a small band of descendants of Stephen the Great taught Vladimir Putin that humanity has invented something more powerful than all weapons: THE VOTE.”

Maria Băsescu, the wife of the former Romanian president, also cast her vote in the Sunday election, stating the European future was important for "our country."

President Maia Sandu: “The September 28 vote is a strong mandate for the process of the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the EU.”

Romania's Ambassador to Chisinau, Cristian-Leon Țurcanu, said the elections showed a victory for "the desire for prosperity in peace and stability."

“On this bank of the Prut River, the citizens’ will also prevailed at a particularly important moment for consolidating democracy and the joint construction of the European future. And, most importantly, the freedom to choose one's own future won, despite the uninterrupted pressures and interference from Russia. These parliamentary elections are a strong response against any attempted external interference and reaffirm the determination to build a future free from malign pressures and influences. And any fight is won more easily when there is unity, and the European family is defined by its solidarity and unity,” the Romanian diplomat’s message states.

Ambassador Țurcanu reiterated Romania's full and constant commitment to support "this historic European path" of the Republic of Moldova.

“We remain by your side, as trusted friends and partners, supporting the consolidation of democratic institutions, European integration, and regional security. Our support is not just political and diplomatic, but also one of principle: support for freedom, for peace, and for the future,” the head of the diplomatic mission concluded.
