“Cheap” car scam leads to prison sentence

A 47-year-old man from Chișinău was sentenced to six years in prison for committing fraud on five occasions. He was also prohibited from holding any positions or managing property for a period of five years.
According to prosecutors, the defendant defrauded several people through an advertisement site, where he frequently posted offers for the sale or import of cars at attractive prices.
In each case, he collected large amounts as advances or loans but failed to fulfill his promises. To make his actions seem legitimate, he used contracts, receipts, and even notarized deeds. However, the customers did not receive the promised vehicles.
The total amount of damage caused to the victims exceeds 250,000 lei.
The trial took place in the absence of the defendant, who has been declared wanted.
According to the General Prosecutor's Office, the man is not a first-time offender; he has previous convictions for theft, robbery, and other offences.
The sentence is not final and can be appealed at the Central Court of Appeal.
