Bridge on Mihai Viteazul Str. in Chisinau has reopened after three years of repairs

The Mihai Viteazul Str. bridge in Chișinău was fully reopened to traffic after nearly three years of disruptions caused by reconstruction work. The city’s deputy mayor, Irina Gutnic, announced this at the Chișinău City Hall meeting on September 30, although Mayor Ion Ceban had already filmed himself on the same bridge on the last day of the parliamentary election campaign, making the same announcement.
Irina Gutnic noted that the rehabilitation work included both the roadway and the sidewalks on the bridge.
"The pedestrian section was widened to provide greater comfort and safety for those crossing. This bridge is one of the largest in the Republic of Moldova. It has six traffic lanes, two pedestrian sidewalks that were renovated, and railings were installed. Complex works were carried out," Gutnic stated.
The bridge was reopened to vehicle traffic at the beginning of July, but work on the pedestrian areas continued. At that time, Chișinău Mayor Ion Ceban emphasized that the work was “extremely necessary and urgent”, noting that prioritizing safety was more important than criticism regarding the long duration of the repairs.
As a key connection point between the city’s sectors and spanning the Bâc River, the bridge is one of the busiest routes in the capital.
The Mihai Viteazul Str. bridge went under repair in 2022. The project’s completion deadline was adjusted several times, with the latest set for the end of 2025.
The reconstruction cost 128 million lei, although the initial estimate was around 78 million lei.
Built in 1974, the Mihai Viteazul Str. bridge is 320 meters long, 26 meters wide, with six traffic lanes and two pedestrian sidewalks.
