Chișinău school enrollment up by nearly 23,000 in the past eight years

The number of students enrolled in schools in Chisinau has increased by 22,703 in the last eight years. If, in 2017, the capital had 85,458 students, this year there are 108,161, representing an increase of over 26%, reported the deputy mayor of Chisinau, Angela Cutasevici, on Tuesday, September 30, at the meeting of Chisinau City Hall.

According to Angela Cutasevici, in the general education institutions of the capital, in the academic year 2025 - 2026, 2,435 more students are studying than in the previous year.

The same source specified that, as of September 1, 10,622 children were enrolled in the first grade.

While representatives of City Hall qualify these figures as "encouraging" the leaders of educational institutions in Chisinau admit that the large number of students presents a daily challenge.

They say that, under these conditions, schools must constantly find solutions to manage the situation as efficiently as possible. Increasingly, in many educational units, classes end up with 40 students, and in some cases, the physical space becomes insufficient for all the children.

One of the educational institutions in Chisinau with many students in classes is the "Mihai Viteazul" Lyceum, where the administration is trying to organize the process so that in classes with many children, experienced teachers teach.

The same situation is also attested at the "Mihail Berezovschi" Lyceum in Chisinau, one of the schools with the largest number of enrolled students.

Data from the General Directorate of Education, Youth and Sports show that 151 schools are operating in Chisinau, of which 18 percent are overcrowded.
