Two ex-'Șor' activists sentenced to 5 years; 12.7M lei confiscated

The presidents of the Soroca and Cimișlia territorial organizations of the former "Șor" Party have each been sentenced to five years in prison, to be served in a semi-closed penitentiary. This decision was announced on October 1 by the Chișinău Court based in Buiucani.

The two defendants were sentenced to prison and banned from participating in accounting and financial activities within political parties for a period of four years. They are also prohibited from being members of any political formations.

Additionally, the court ordered the confiscation of funds obtained illegally: approximately 9.7 million lei from the president of the Soroca territorial organization and about 3 million lei from the president of the Cimișlia organization.

Since the defendants failed to appear at their sentencing, the preventive measure of prohibiting them from leaving the country was changed to preventive arrest while they are under investigation.

According to evidence gathered by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, in collaboration with the National Anti-Corruption Center and the Intelligence and Security Service, the defendants knowingly accepted financing from an organized criminal group between July and October 2022, totaling approximately 12.7 million lei.

This money was allegedly used to fund protests organized by the party and to pay salaries "in envelopes" to members of territorial offices.

Throughout the trial, the defendants maintained their innocence.
