Chișinău Music Day: Philharmonic season starts with The Wedding
International Music Day is being celebrated today, marking the universal power of music and recognising the contribution of artists. The day also aims to inspire new generations to view music as a form of authentic expression.
In Chișinău, Moldova, the Serghei Lunchevici National Philharmonic opened its 85th season with a unique event, The Wedding (Nunta)—a story told through classical music.
The Wedding concert featured Mendelssohn's Wedding March, excerpts from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, and other works from the universal repertoire. Tickets for the concert sold out quickly, with the Palace of the Republic Hall hosting a capacity crowd.
Mihail Agafița, Artistic Director of the Symphonic Orchestra, explained the thematic choice: "Autumn in Moldova is full of weddings, and we decided to reflect this beautiful phenomenon through classical music, putting together this collection of overtures, arias, and choruses."
Among the audience members, mathematician Svetlana Cojocaru, Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM), drew an interesting parallel: "I chose mathematics because it contains the same harmony as music; in a way, it is very similar to what I do, only from a different perspective."
For musicians, the art form is more than just entertainment. While music is a revelation for audiences, for the musicians, it represents a deep personal commitment.
"For us, it is the specialty to which we have dedicated an entire life. It is something sacred, something holy. If God has given you talent, you do not have the right to keep it to yourself," said Iurie Mahovici, who holds the honorary title of People's Artist.
Separately, on 1 October, musical excellence was celebrated at another major event organised by the Union of Musicians.
"We hold the Gala of Musical Excellence, which always brings us new names like Valeriu Cașcaval, Valy Boghean, the Camerata Chișinău Orchestra, and the Advahov brothers," said Svetlana Bivol, President of the Union of Musicians.
International Music Day has been celebrated since 1975, at the initiative of the International Music Council.
