Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Thursday that Russia has the capacity to violate airspace across the continent. He was addressing heads of state and government in Copenhagen.

Mr Zelenskyy said recent drone incidents in Europe clearly signal that Russia feels bold enough to escalate the conflict.

He said Russia has always aimed to "dismantle the West" and divide Europe, adding that its current strategy is simple: "to divide Europe, foment disputes, and prevent us from finding common ground. I believe we must do the exact opposite of what Russia expects."

The Ukrainian President argued that if Russians dare to launch drones against Poland or violate the airspace of Northern European countries, it means this can happen anywhere in Europe. He insisted that rapid and effective reaction and defense forces are needed. He urged European leaders to commit to specific written security guarantees for Ukraine.

Mr Zelenskyy also criticised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, urging him to cease the purchase of Russian oil and natural gas. The statement follows a series of bitter exchanges between the two leaders. Mr Zelenskyy accused Hungary of violating its airspace with drones, while Mr Orbán declared that Ukraine is not a sovereign country.

Zelenskyy: Moldova and Ukraine ready for EU accession talks

In his online address at the European Council meeting, Mr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova are already prepared to open Cluster 1 – "Fundamental Values" – within the framework of negotiations for accession to the European Union (EU).

Mr Zelenskyy added that he is working with European partners on a joint defense system, which he called a "counter-drone wall," noting the SAFE mechanism could accelerate the idea's implementation. He also called for direct reactions against Russia, so that it feels the real price of its actions.

Maia Sandu applauded at EPC Summit

Leaders in the Danish capital discussed intensifying air defence measures on Wednesday amid increasing drone threats, including outside the EU's eastern borders. On Thursday morning, they discussed the war in Ukraine during a panel organised on the sidelines of the European Political Community (EPC) Summit, conveying messages of unity and support.

The summit opened with messages of congratulations addressed to the Republic of Moldova. Moldovan President Maia Sandu was applauded after António Costa, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, highlighted the "crushing victory" achieved by pro-European forces in the 28 September parliamentary elections.
