Weather accidents surge: 112 alert for drivers

Drivers are being urged to exercise extreme caution on roads following a surge in accidents linked to adverse weather.

The National Single Emergency Call Service, 112, issued the alert after operators received approximately 40 calls about road crashes in a 90-minute period on Tuesday.

The service attributed most of the incidents to wet roads, poor visibility, and inappropriate speed.

Ana Carpovici, a Senior PR Specialist for the 112 Service, confirmed most crashes were minor, though one pedestrian was hospitalised after being struck by a vehicle.

"We are urging all road users to reduce their speed, maintain a safe distance, and avoid all non-essential travel in areas affected by rain," the service said.

Specialists are also reminding the public that 112 is for genuine emergencies only, appealing for responsible use so that specialist crews can respond to critical cases promptly.

The warning follows a General Police Inspectorate report which showed 77 people died in road accidents during the first six months of the year.
