Two Nobel laureates meet with Moldovan researchers and youth

A significant day for science in the Republic of Moldova occurred when two Nobel Prize laureates, Japanese physicist Hiroshi Amano and American professor James Rothman, visited the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM). During their visit, they met with researchers, professors, and young students. Hiroshi Amano, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2014 for his invention of blue light-emitting diodes, delivered a public lecture. Both scientists were appointed honorary members of the ASM and received the prestigious "Dimitrie Cantemir" medal.

“It is a great privilege for me to become an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The discussions with the young students were also very informative for me. Moldova, like many other countries, is facing certain challenges, and through these dialogues, we aim to contribute to solving future problems,” said Hiroshi Amano.

Students from Chișinău, Vulcănești, and Nisporeni listened with great interest to the public lecture delivered by the Japanese professor, titled “Let’s work together to build a sustainable world.” They shared their enthusiasm and expressed a desire to continue their studies in the field of science and technology.

“I am pleasantly surprised and happy that Professor Hiroshi Amano decided to come to Moldova to give us this lecture. I hope there will be more experiences like this in the future,” one student said.

“The motivation they had and the struggle they faced for their idea is remarkable. I want to ask where he found such motivation and why he continued when the entire scientific community at the time said their product wasn't worth the interest,” another student added.

“I can say with certainty that I am going home with a lot of motivation and initiative that he transmitted to us. He also started as a student who faced difficult exams,” one participant noted.

“We bring living examples and tell students: look at these teachers who worked hard and reached great heights, but they achieved this through diligence, dedication, and perseverance,” said Ion Tighineanu, President of the ASM.

Professor Hiroshi Amano will conclude his visit to the Republic of Moldova on Wednesday. Meanwhile, 2013 Nobel Prize laureate for Medicine, American professor James Rothman, continues his program in the country with participation in the International Conference on Nanotechnologies and Biomedical Engineering, along with visits to Fălești and Telenești.
