Moldova sees record foreign student enrollment, mainly in Medicine and Education

Higher education institutions in the Republic of Moldova admitted a record number of foreign students in the 2025-2026 academic year. In total, 1,113 students from 24 countries around the world were enrolled in higher education programs in the Republic of Moldova, 376 more than in the 2024-2025 academic year, the Ministry of Education and Research informs.

Young foreigners enrolled mainly in the bachelor's cycle, pursuing specializations such as Medicine, Educational Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Translation and Interpretation, Business and Animation.

The largest admission to master's programs is at "Ion Creangă" University, where over 170 students chose to pursue their studies in Educational Sciences, Psychology and Animation.

Universities with the most foreign students

• “Nicolae Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy: 300 students (India, Israel, France, Morocco, Belgium, Finland)

• “Ion Creangă” State Pedagogical University: 279 students (Romania, Ukraine)

• Technical University of Moldova: 273 students (predominantly from India)

• State University of Moldova: 161 students

• Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova: 100 students

In order to support the internationalization of studies in the Republic of Moldova, in recent years, about one million euros have been allocated, at the initiative of the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), with the support of the World Bank through the “Higher Education in Moldova” Project.

Thus, over 280 university teachers have improved their English language skills for teaching courses. At the current stage, six programs from four universities in the Republic of Moldova, four of which are newly developed, are set to be accredited by international agencies, facilitating the academic and professional mobility of graduates.

Also, the MEC has initiated a campaign to promote studies from the Republic of Moldova in India, a country with the most significant potential for attracting young people to study. For better information on study opportunities in our country, the information platform studyinmd.mec.gov.md was created.

"The increase in the number of foreign students in our higher education institutions shows that universities in the Republic of Moldova are becoming increasingly attractive internationally. The modernization of study programs, investments in facilities and qualified human resources allow young people from all over the world to study here in conditions of academic excellence, preparing for competitive and open careers at a global level", stated Adriana Cazacu, State Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Research.
