Trump threatens 100% China tariffs over rare earth curbs

President Donald Trump announced that he will impose fresh tariffs of 100% on Chinese imports, starting no later than November 1.

The statement followed Beijing’s decision to impose new restrictions on the export of rare earth elements, a highly sensitive issue in US-China relations.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump reacted to the tightening of China’s export rules this week. He wrote that China is becoming "very hostile" and is trying to hold the whole world "hostage," according to the BBC.

“Effective November 1, 2025, or sooner depending on the subsequent actions or changes undertaken by China, the United States will apply an additional 100% tariff to China in addition to the other tariffs they are currently paying,” Mr Trump wrote.

He also stated there was "no reason" for a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which had been planned for the end of October, and threatened to introduce export controls for "critical software." He did not elaborate on the timing of this threat.

The former President also announced, among other things, export controls on strategic software to China.
