Moldova vulnerable to Russia attacks EU vows support

Moldova remains vulnerable to disinformation, economic pressure, and cyber attacks from the Russian Federation, but the EU will stand by it "every step of the way," the bloc's ambassador to Chișinău has said.

Iwona Piórko made the statement in her first interview since taking up the post.

"The Russian Federation clearly will not stop. For this reason, these vulnerabilities will persist: disinformation, economic pressure, and cyber attacks. Authorities and citizens must maintain their determination and resilience," she stated, adding that the EU "will stand by you every step of the way."

Ms Piórko noted that the results of recent elections confirm citizen support for Moldova's European path. She congratulated authorities for organising a "safe and fair" process and added that the accession process is irreversible. However, she stressed it will require "a lot of hard work and decisive reforms to consolidate the rule of law and the country's economy."

The ambassador also discussed Moldova's recently completed screening process, justice reforms, the impact of the geopolitical context on the EU's enlargement process, the European Growth Plan, expanded export quotas for Moldovan agricultural products, accession to the SEPA Single Euro Payments Area, and major EU-backed infrastructure projects.
