Moldovans eat more carefully, favoring eggs, fruits, and vegetables
An increasing number of Moldovans are becoming more conscious about their food choices. Official data shows that the consumption of eggs, fruits, and vegetables has risen over the past year. In 2024, the average Moldovan consumed 256 eggs—17 more than the previous year. Apples continue to be the most popular fruit, and nutritionists are supportive of these healthier dietary choices.
The market stalls are full of everything - fruits, vegetables, eggs, meat and dairy products. People fill out their shopping lists so that they have a rich and balanced diet. When it comes to health, people say that they do not take into account prices:
"We eat everything, vegetables, fruits, everything".
"We eat everything. Expensive, but what can you do, that's the situation".
"Everything: meat, vegetables".
Potatoes are in great demand, cheaper than other vegetables.
"They haven't gone up in price at all, they are still cheaper than last year. - Haven't you noticed that you have fewer buyers? - No, there are enough", says a trader.
Dairy products remain a must in the shopping cart, even though they have increased in price compared to last summer.
"Cow cheese, sheep cheese, yoghurt. They buy everything. Prices haven't gone up much. If buyers like the product, they come all the time," said another shopkeeper.
Shopkeepers say, however, that people are now buying fewer eggs, because they have become more expensive recently.
Eggs are a good source of protein, doctors say, and can even replace pork, which, if consumed in large quantities, is associated with various diseases. At the same time, they encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
"It is commendable that Moldovans are starting to consume more fruits and vegetables, and this is quite important, very beneficial for health, both for normalising intestinal microflora, for maintaining optimal weight, and for lasting immunity," said nutritionist Sergiu Munteanu.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that last year, a Moldovan consumed an average of 256 eggs, 17 more than in 2023. Poultry consumption also increased: if in 2023 a person ate an average of 28.7 kilograms per year, in 2024 this figure rose to 31.8 kilograms.
Fruits and vegetables have also become increasingly appreciated by Moldovans. In 2024, people consumed, on average, 79.3 kilograms of potatoes and over 93 kilograms of apples, 6.8 and 9.4 kilograms more than the previous year, respectively.
