Nobel laureate James Rothman visits Falesti - his family's place of origin

Professor James Rothman, a world-renowned researcher who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2013, visited the Republic of Moldova for the first time. This visit highlights his Bassarabian roots, as his family originated from Fălești, where they lived in the 19th century. During his visit, he spoke with students at "Mihai Eminescu" Theoretical Lyceum in the city, encouraging them to believe in the power of science and the importance of curiosity.

The academician was looking forward to visiting Fălești. Happy to return to his roots, he wanted to discover how the people there live today.

“I didn’t know until this summer that my family comes from here, from Fălești. I found out after some research. My grandfather was born here, and his family lived here for at least 50 to 75 years—probably closer to a hundred years. Then he emigrated to the United States around 1910. I believe we all have reasons to want to know where we come from,” said James Rothman, a professor at Yale University.

He was eager to learn if the students of the “Mihai Eminescu” Lyceum dream of careers in science, and he spoke to them about the importance of education. The students had prepared an artistic presentation for him.

“Science is about understanding how the world works. Each of you, and all of us, are responsible for our own education,” the American professor emphasized.

The students felt honored by the scientist’s visit.

“It was an interesting meeting. It’s not every day you have such opportunities to meet with valuable people,” one student remarked.

“I chose to participate in this event because Mr. James is an important example for me. He has inspired me a lot. His discoveries have greatly contributed to our society, and I believe we have a lot to learn from him,” another student added.

Also during his visit to the Republic of Moldova, the professor was honored with the "Dimitrie Cantemir" Medal of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. He also received the title Honoris Causa from the "Nicolae Testemițanu" State University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
