Chișinău economy: Capital generates 60% of Moldova's GDP

The capital Chișinău accounts for over 60% of the Republic of Moldova's economy and is widening the gap with the rest of the country, according to economic analyst Veaceslav Ioniță.
Mr Ioniță presented data showing that over 60% of the economic activity in Moldova is concentrated in Chișinău, which also generates more than half of the country's industrial output.
The analyst highlighted that per capita GDP in the capital is four times higher than the national average, a disparity that continues to grow each year.
"We generate 65–70% of the national value created in the Republic of Moldova," Mr Ioniță said. "And 90% of all our real estate investments—representing future savings—are concentrated here. The trend has remained largely the same for the last 30 years."
The number of employees in Chișinău is 2.4 times higher than the national average, he added.
The number of workers grew from 289,000 in 2015 to approximately 312,000 in 2023. Furthermore, the total turnover of Chișinău-based companies exceeded 200bn lei in 2017 and reached approximately 350bn lei in 2022.
The figures show that about 70% of all sales in Moldova originate from enterprises in the capital, where the turnover per capita is six times greater than the national average.
