RANKING | Moldovan passport allows visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 121 countries

Citizens of the Republic of Moldova can travel to 121 countries and territories either visa-free or with a visa on arrival. According to the Henley Passport Index 2025, the Moldovan passport ranks 48th out of 227 countries, an improvement from its previous ranking of 49th last year.

The Republic of Moldova is ranked between Albania (47th) and Venezuela (49th), ahead of the Russian Federation (50th).
In the same ranking, Romania ranks 13th, with the Romanian passport offering access to approximately 180 destinations, and Ukraine – 33rd.
Constant long-term evolution
The passport of the Republic of Moldova has shown a consistent increase in recent years. In 2008, the Moldovan document allowed free travel to approximately 80 countries, ranking 66th.
The most crucial leap occurred in 2014, with the liberalization of the visa regime with the EU, when the Moldovan passport suddenly advanced from 68th place to 46th place.
In the following years, the Republic of Moldova maintained a stable position in the first half of the ranking, achieving its best result in 2022, when it ranked 45th worldwide.

Visa-Free destinations for Moldovans
The Moldovan passport currently allows visa-free travel to all Schengen countries, as well as to countries including Turkey, Israel, Georgia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Seychelles, Mauritius, Singapore, and various destinations in Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
With access to 121 destinations, Moldova exceeds the global average of 109, ranking it higher than most countries in the region regarding international mobility.
However, citizens of the Republic of Moldova still need a visa to enter certain large countries, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Australia.
