Dodon: Socialists will not back Alexandru Munteanu’s PAS-nominated government

The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), which has representation in the new Parliament as part of the "Patriotic" Bloc (BEP), has declared that it will not support a government led by Alexandru Munteanu, the candidate proposed for prime minister by the Action and Solidarity Party. This announcement was made on Friday, October 17, by PSRM leader Igor Dodon via social media.
Although he acknowledges that Munteanu is “a professional and a good economist”, Dodon stated that the opposition “does not want to assume political responsibility for a PAS government of Maia Sandu”.
“My opinion about Mr. Munteanu, who is not yet a designated candidate, but is being discussed, is that he is a professional, a good economist. (...) A good profession or training is important, but the question is: will they allow him to be a good prime minister? (...) The position of prime minister must be occupied by people with character, who can and do insist on what they propose”, Dodon stated.
The socialist leader suggested that the new prime minister, proposed by PAS could have a limited role, offering the example of the former head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Veronica Dragalin: "Let's not repeat the Dragalin scenario, who came here with aspirations, but ended up with what ended up".
He also criticized the reactions within PAS after the announcement of Munteanu's candidacy. He wondered if "isn't the Ukrainianization of Moldova desired", considering that he has lived in Ukraine in recent years.
"The number one problem will not be the opposition, we will not vote for the Munteanu Government — let it be very clear. Even if it is..., to avoid new interpretations, as the opposition, we cannot and do not want to assume political responsibility for a PAS government of Maia Sandu. Because the results will not be beneficial not because Munteanu is good or bad, but because he will not be allowed, and the situation is like that", Dodon pointed out.
Dodon does not give up his mandate as a deputy
In the same live broadcast on social networks, Igor Dodon, who is under criminal investigation in several cases, announced that he will remain in the new Parliament for the entire duration of his mandate. He stated that his party respects the decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the validation of the election results and the mandates of the deputies. However, in the meeting of October 16, the representatives of the BEP asked the High Court to annul the election, citing several irregularities in the electoral process.
"Whether we like it or not, yesterday's elections were validated. I want to congratulate all the opposition deputies, whose mandates were validated yesterday. And I hope for cooperation in the next Parliament to defend the interests of citizens and the rule of law, we see the capture of state institutions by PAS. (...) Now I have made the decision to be in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, as our citizens delegated me by vote, alongside our colleagues from BEP", the politician said.
Igor Dodon also reacted to the statements of Vladimir Voronin, who announced the communists' intention to form a separate faction in Parliament, saying that, next week, PSRM will convene a meeting of the Republican Council, during which decisions will be made regarding the party's position on this issue.
"The people, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, a fourth of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, 25%, voted not for the socialists or the communists, or I don't know who, or others, or our colleagues from Tarlev's party, they voted for the Patriotic Electoral Bloc. It is not known, if they went separately, what the results of each party would have been. (...) The first session of the Parliament was announced for October 22, at 10:00, where the composition, name and leadership of the parliamentary factions are to be announced. On Wednesday, at 10:00, we will announce the position of the Party of Socialists in this regard", said Dodon.
At the same time, the socialist announced that the socialist team is to be reformed.
"I believe that some changes must be made. We must modernize, we must come up with new faces and, yes, after discussing with colleagues from the Socialist Party, with colleagues from other political formations, with other people, we will come up with proposals in this regard. (...) We advocate for cooperation with the parties that did not pass into Parliament. For example, the Heart of Moldova Party, led by Irina Vlah, which was illegally excluded. And other extra-parliamentary parties, why not, let's try to make a common agenda in this Parliament", said socialist Igor Dodon.
The "Patriotic" Electoral Bloc, consisting of the PSRM, PCRM, "Moldova's Heart" and "Moldova's Future", was created before the 2025 parliamentary elections. Still, its composition was changed in the last days of the campaign, after the exclusion from the electoral race of the "Moldova's Heart" Party, led by Irina Vlah.
At that time, the Central Court of Appeal ordered the limitation of the party's activity for 12 months because it benefited from illegal financing in the electoral campaign for the September 28 parliamentary elections.
In the September 28, 2025 elections, the bloc obtained 24.2% of the votes, which ensured it 26 mandates in the future Parliament.
