Ukraine drone attack: Russian power station in Ulyanovsk on fire

An electrical transformer in Russia's Ulyanovsk region was set alight following a Ukrainian drone attack, Russian channels on Telegram reported on Tuesday, 18 October.

Footage shared on social media showed drones hitting the Veshkaima power station in the region overnight, causing a fire.

The Veshkaima station is a 500kV power transformer owned by a subsidiary of Rosseti, Russia's largest power grid operator.

Ukraine has stepped up long-range attacks against Russia's oil, gas, and energy infrastructure, which are key revenue sources for Moscow and help fund its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Veshkaima station is located more than 900 kilometers east of the Russia-Ukraine border.

Also, on the night of 16 October, Ukrainian drones struck a similar power station in Russia's Volgograd region, regional governor Andrey Bocharov reported, according to The Kyiv Independent.

In late September, Belgorod region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported an attack on critical infrastructure and significant power outages after Ukrainian missiles allegedly hit a thermal power plant.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy met with Donald Trump at the White House on Friday, 17 October, to discuss arms agreements and peace prospects, a day after the US President announced his intention to meet with Vladimir Putin in Budapest to try to mediate an end to the war in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump reportedly told his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, at the White House that he did not plan to supply Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles at this time.

Mr Trump declined to comment following the two-and-a-half-hour meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday. Mr Zelenskiy also refused to answer journalists' questions regarding the Tomahawk missiles.
