Discover Edineț Museum: Historical treasures in northern Moldova

In northern Moldova, the nearly century-old Edineț Museum holds historical treasures waiting to be discovered.

With around 27,000 museum exhibits, it offers visitors an immersive dialogue between past and present, making it a prime destination for museum visits.
Constructed in 1924 by the Jewish family Šmil and Hova Loibman, the building initially served the Jewish community as a hospital and later as a religious organization. In 1975, the Edineț Museum was officially founded. Today, it displays artifacts spanning from the Paleolithic era to contemporary times, across three main sections: History, Nature, and Folk Art.
“The museum is a cultural heritage site where the present meets the past and reaches out to the future. Earlier, when there were no phones or internet, students always came here for materials, and the museum was full. Now, adults and locals returning from abroad visit with great interest,” explains museographer Silvia Speianu.
Admission is free.
“Here, you can learn history in one place, surrounded by multiple artifacts and exhibits, often guided by a knowledgeable museographer. This region carries significant historical weight, especially in terms of prehistory.”
“Visiting the museum is highly relevant today, as it preserves the history experienced by our grandparents and great-grandparents. I believe that museum visits will grow, attracting both local and international tourists, as the museum showcases treasures with the right expertise to reveal every corner’s secrets.”
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of visitors to Moldova museums increased in 2024, with nearly 830,000 people exploring the country’s 132 museums.

Potrivit Biroul Național de Statistică, fluxul de vizitatori în muzeele din Republica Moldova pe parcursul anului 2024 a crescut. Aproape 830 de mii de vizitatori au trecut pragul celor 132 de muzee din țară.
