Two suspects arrested over €88 million Louvre Museum robbery

Two men have been arrested in connection with the spectacular Louvre Museum robbery in Paris, where thieves made off with royal jewels worth €88 million.

Sources cited by Le Parisien and Paris Match said one suspect was apprehended at Charles-de-Gaulle Airport as he prepared to board an international flight, while the second was detained shortly afterward in the Paris region.

Both suspects are under investigation for organized theft and criminal conspiracy. Investigators believe they were part of a four-man team that executed one of the most daring jewel thefts in recent French history.

At around 9:30 a.m. on October 19, two men reportedly used a lift platform to reach the gallery housing the French crown jewels. After smashing a window and several glass cases, they sped away on two scooters. The entire operation lasted no more than eight minutes.

A 2019–2024 report from the French Court of Auditors had already warned about serious security flaws at the Louvre. Only a fraction of one wing was covered by surveillance cameras, and in January, museum director Laurence des Cars alerted the Ministry of Culture to a “worrying level of deterioration” and the urgent need for upgrades.
