Auto expert predicts end of internal combustion cars by 2035

The number of electric car owners in the Republic of Moldova is steadily increasing. Experts indicate that we are currently in a transition period, and it is expected that most vehicles will be electrified in the near future. Specifically, auto expert Constantin Mihalachi stated on the "Zi de Zi" show on Radio Moldova that by 2030-2035, there will be no more cars with internal combustion engines, and everyone will have switched exclusively to electric vehicles.

"There are many people, even here in the Republic of Moldova, who want to have a car that no longer pollutes as much as, for example, cars with diesel engines. Many people are very excited about the technology of electric cars, which to a large extent are gadgets, after all, very technological cars, people like these. (...) It is a technology that somehow makes you more responsible. You have to want to accept it, because, however, you have to change your behavior a little, as an owner. Having an electric car, you no longer always have access to a station that is always by your side, you have to make a plan, you have to think carefully about where you are going to go, to get to the stations", said Constantin Mihalachi.

According to him, more and more companies are proposing to deliver such services.

"Even the major car manufacturers have started to announce that, by 2030-2035, they will give up cars with internal combustion engines and will already switch exclusively to fully electric cars. One after another, they are already announcing that they have reconsidered their strategy and will move into other technologies, including electrified cars. Still, cars that will also include an internal combustion engine", added Constantin Mihalachi.

In the Republic of Moldova, a network of power stations has been developed over the past few years. The largest one has over 100 charging points, the specialist emphasized.

"Despite many opinions that there are not many power stations in the Republic of Moldova, we have several networks belonging to different companies. Our country, not being a large one, it is very easy to find a station always, within a radius of 50 kilometers. There are many stations in the capital and at border crossings, especially with Romania. They are in the main cities: Balti, Cahul, Comrat, Orhei. It would be good for the state to control this moment better, because it still happens that there are stations that do not work", the expert emphasized.

Referring to the impact of the increase in the number of electric cars on the environment and their contribution to reducing carbon emissions, the specialist agreed that “we do not pollute with exhaust gases, at least in traffic”, but added that “the electricity we have in the Republic of Moldova is not the cleanest”: “So, for this we should have more wind energy, more photovoltaic panels, these are what give you this chance to have the cleanest electricity possible”.

We note that the Republic of Moldova is the first Eastern Partnership state to test clean energy technologies in a regulated framework, such as smart microgrids. Among these is the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) system, which will allow the delivery of energy stored in electric vehicles to the grid. The Vehicle-to-Grid technology will be tested in the Republic of Moldova by the Green City Lab, within the innovative energy testing space Sandbox.

In the first six months of 2025, over 13,000 electric and hybrid vehicles were registered in the Republic of Moldova, an increase of over 270% compared to the same period in 2024. Also, according to statistical data, over 64,000 electric and hybrid means of transport have been registered in our country from 2018 to the present.
