Oana Țoiu on Moldovans with Romanian citizenship left without ID cards: "Other institutions are authorized to respond"

Romania's Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, commented for the first time in an interview with Radio Free Europe on the detention of hundreds of Romanian identity cards belonging to Moldovans with dual citizenship. These detentions were made under suspicion that these individuals had declared fictitious domiciles in Romania.

The head of diplomacy stated that other Romanian state institutions are better equipped to clarify the situation.

"Each institution must fulfill its responsibilities to ensure that it makes the right decisions. Control institutions must verify this, and necessary reforms should be implemented," declared Oana Țoiu. She noted that, over time, there have been several suspicions in the public sphere regarding the process of regaining citizenship and the performance of the National Authority for Citizenship, as well as that of other institutions.

"It has been very beneficial for Romania to open the doors for citizenship, especially for citizens of the Republic of Moldova," Oana Țoiu added, suggesting that this crucial process would help integrate the Republic of Moldova into Europe, according to Free Europe.

However, hundreds of individuals with dual Romanian-Moldovan citizenship have lost their Romanian identity cards because their documents were confiscated at customs. This applies to cases involving 870 citizens whose identity documents were seized by the Border Police while crossing from Romania to the Republic of Moldova or vice versa. The primary reason given by Romanian border authorities for this action is the alleged fictitious residence in Romania.
