New Government sworn in. Maia Sandu: “Courageous steps are needed to boost the economy”

The members of the new Government of the Republic of Moldova, who received the vote of confidence from Parliament on October 31, took the oath of office at the Presidency on November 1. The ceremony was attended by President Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.

"I pledge to dedicate all my power and skills to the prosperity of the Republic of Moldova, to respect the Constitution and the laws of the country, to defend democracy, and to uphold fundamental human rights and freedoms, as well as the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Moldova," said the deputy prime ministers and ministers from the Cabinet led by Alexandru Munteanu. One after another, they took an oath and then knelt before the state flag.

Thanking them for assuming their responsibilities “during a difficult period for our country and the entire region,” President Maia Sandu urged the members of the new Cabinet of Ministers to “seize the historic opportunity presented by European integration.”

“After years of managing multiple crises and challenges, we need a government that focuses on development starting today. This government must complete the transformation of the Republic of Moldova into a modern European state. It is essential that, in the coming period, you direct your efforts toward improving governance in all areas by promoting efficiency and integrity, as well as enhancing the quality of public policies and services,” declared the head of state at the conclusion of the inauguration ceremony.

According to the president, "courageous" measures are necessary to ensure economic development by attracting investments and increasing competitiveness and productivity, ultimately leading to an improved standard of living for the people.

Continuing to strengthen resilience, “primarily in state institutions,” is also crucial, as this will enable the country to face the risks and threats it encounters.

In her message to the new ministers, Maia Sandu urged them to finalize ongoing reforms, such as reforming the justice system, "so that all Moldovans feel that justice is finally being served and that the law is applied equally to all." She also emphasized the need to reform education, undertake administrative-territorial reform so that local authorities can access European funds for local development, and ensure the energy security of the Republic of Moldova.

"I know that the workload is unprecedented for the Republic of Moldova, and I understand that people may not always see the connection between this workload and our European Union accession process. However, meaningful progress is built with effort—brick by brick. To advance toward accession and to prosper afterward, we must complete the important reforms that we have already started," the head of state pointed out.

Maia Sandu expressed her gratitude to the new government team for "maintaining peace, defending democracy and citizen safety, implementing vital programs for national and local development, and making history by passing the referendum on the European integration of the Republic of Moldova."

"I recognize the efforts and sacrifices that went into these achievements. I thank all my colleagues in the outgoing Cabinet. I am particularly grateful to Mr. Dorin Recean for assuming responsibility for governance during such a complex period and for demonstrating effective crisis management," concluded Maia Sandu.

The government led by Alexandru Munteanu, economist, university professor, and businessman recognized for his work in investments as well as his involvement in international educational and cultural projects, was inaugurated on October 31 after receiving the support of 55 deputies from the parliamentary majority.

Half of the members of the Munteanu Cabinet retained their positions from the former Recean Government, and three of the eight new ministers previously served in the Executive as state secretaries or advisors to the Prime Minister. Additionally, Alexei Buzu, the former Minister of Labor and Social Protection, has been appointed as the new Secretary General of the Government.

The Government’s activity program focuses on the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, promoting peace, ensuring prosperity, and enhancing the quality of life. The aim is to translate the pro-European commitment into tangible benefits for citizens, even before formal accession to the European Union.
