Moldova pushes for 8,050 lei minimum wage by 2026

Moldova’s trade unions are pushing for a new minimum wage of 8,050 lei monthly in the real sector of the economy, set to take effect on January 1, 2026. This significant proposal was the focus of consultations with employers' representatives on November 3.

According to the National Confederation of Trade Unions of Moldova (CNSM), this 8,050 lei minimum wage is designed to implement the core indicator of the EU Minimum Wage Directive. Specifically, the amount represents 50% of the current year’s forecasted average monthly wage, which is projected at 16,100 lei.

CNSM President Igor Zubcu stressed that "the minimum wage must ensure a decent living wage for the employee and cover at least the minimum subsistence level for an adult and a child. Crucially, it must also contribute to the calculation of at least a minimum old-age pension."

The CNSM proposal will now be deliberated by the National Employers' Confederation before any final document signing.

Meanwhile, Deputy of the Action and Solidarity Party and former Finance Minister, Victoria Belous, confirmed that the minimum wage in the economy will indeed be raised. She told the PE FAȚĂ show on Moldova 1 that an official decision, along with details on the budgetary impact, could be announced before the end of the current month. Authorities are currently finalizing the necessary calculations.

The current monthly minimum wage in Moldova is 5,500 lei for a full-time, 169-hour work schedule, effective since January 1, 2025.
