Education Minister promises solutions for overcrowded classes; strategy to be presented by end of November

The authorities are developing a comprehensive plan to tackle overcrowding in educational institutions in the Republic of Moldova. This announcement was made by Dan Perciun, the Minister of Education and Research, who acknowledged that the situation is urgent, particularly in the municipality of Chisinau.

"This is an important issue, especially for the capital. I don't think there was a school in Chișinău that we visited during the election campaign where we didn't receive this request from teachers," Perciun stated on November 5, following a government meeting.

According to Perciun, the Ministry of Education and Research is currently working to finalize a set of concrete measures, which will be presented by the end of November.

"We will present a vision from the ministry on this subject towards the end of November, which will include the necessary investments and steps that the Chișinău City Hall can take in this direction. We will also come up with some opportunities but will provide complete data during a press conference at the end of November. We are in the process of finalizing specific solutions for both the short term, covering one or two years, and for the next three to five years," the official said.

The problem of overcrowded classrooms is particularly severe in schools in Chisinau, where the number of students often exceeds the capacity of the institutions.

In recent years, the increase in student enrollment combined with a lack of expanded infrastructure has resulted in classes with over 35 students. According to specialists, this situation negatively impacts the quality of the educational process and teaching effectiveness.

Data from the General Directorate of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Chișinău Municipal Council indicates that there are 151 schools operating in Chisinau, with 18 percent classified as overcrowded.
