Azerbaijan army adopting NATO standards, Aliyev says

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev has announced that the Azerbaijan army is currently adapting to NATO standards.

The declaration came during a meeting with North Atlantic Alliance representatives in Baku on Thursday, November 6. The statement was subsequently published on the official Azerbaijani presidency website.

"The Azerbaijani army is being brought into conformity with NATO standards and, in this context, cooperates closely with the Turkey military," the official communication reads. Permanent representatives from Turkey, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Czechia, Portugal, and Spain attended the meeting, alongside deputies from the US and France representatives to NATO.

President Aliyev affirmed that Azerbaijan has achieved its "main goal since gaining independence – the liberation of our territories from occupation," and added that military modernization efforts will continue. He also spoke of "expanding relations with NATO," noting that discussions with Alliance officials encompassed more than just military aspects, focusing also on cooperation in regional development and energy security.

NATO cooperation with Baku is long-standing, commencing in 1992 when Azerbaijan joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council, followed by the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in 1997.

In 1994, Azerbaijan enrolled in the Partnership for Peace program, a key initiative for Eastern European and former Soviet states. This collaboration deepened in 2004, when Ilham Aliyev presented the country's inaugural Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) with the Alliance.

Azerbaijan's commitment has been visible in its contributions to several international missions under NATO's umbrella, notably the "Resolute Support" operation in Afghanistan from 2002 to 2021. More recently, in June 2025, the nation hosted a joint military planning exercise, and in July–August, the Azerbaijan army participated in the NATO Agile Spirit exercises held in Georgia.
