Radu Marian says fuel supplies will remain stable despite Lukoil sanctions

Radu Marian, the president of the Parliamentary Committee on Economy, Budget, and Finance, assured that there will be no shortage of gasoline or diesel in the market once the sanctions against the Lukoil group take effect. He also stated that he would seek explanations from the Competition Council regarding Lukoil-Moldova's status as the sole supplier of aviation fuel for the “Eugen Doga” International Airport in Chișinău, as well as the company's ownership of the storage and refueling infrastructure for aircraft.

Radu Marian stated on Next TV that Lukoil has until November 17 to take action, as the state plans to take over aviation-related assets. He explained that the situation is less complicated in other sectors, such as retail gasoline and diesel, because suppliers can be easily changed. “There are enough players in the market, so there’s no risk of fuel shortages at the pump, as others can compensate if needed. Ultimately, we should focus on the broader goal of this decision, which is commendable. The U.S. has taken the right approach to limit Russia’s resources that are used to fund its war,” he said.

Marian also noted that several Moldovan companies have expressed interest in taking over aircraft refueling operations at Chișinău’s “Eugen Doga” International Airport.

Washington’s decision to include Lukoil and Rosneft on its sanctions list has created turmoil in EU countries where these Russian oil giants operate, as they seek to prevent fuel supply disruptions before the sanctions take effect on November 21.

Romania and Bulgaria are working to prevent the shutdown of Lukoil-owned refineries before the U.S. sanctions against Russian owners are implemented later this month. According to Politico, Moldova’s fuel supply could also be impacted.

The Chișinău government may take over the only jet fuel depot at “Eugen Doga” International Airport once Lukoil is forced to cease operations on November 21 due to Western sanctions. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu stated that authorities have made an offer to purchase the company’s infrastructure to ensure continuity of flights and a stable fuel supply.
