AI-based medical assistant created by a Moldovan who was battling cancer

Fear of the unknown can often hold us back, especially when it comes to our health. However, some individuals find strength in their struggle against illness and use their experiences to help others. One notable example is Traian Chivriga, who, while battling cancer, developed an AI-powered medical assistant capable of interpreting any medical document from any hospital.

Traian was diagnosed with colon cancer last spring and underwent surgery, followed by eight rounds of chemotherapy.

"I went through these chemotherapy sessions until spring. It wasn’t easy because, at some point, my liver didn’t tolerate the substances I was using," said Traian Chivriga, an entrepreneur.

During this challenging period, Traian observed a significant lack of digitalization in the medical system, where patients still had to wait in long lines with large files of paperwork. This experience inspired him to create Cindi, an AI-based medical assistant, developed over the past year.

"Initially, I called my brother, Cristi, who is an engineer at Microsoft, and said, 'Let's do this together.' We started developing something. Our first product wasn't great, but then we approached users with chronic diseases to understand their needs, and we began improving it based on their feedback," Traian explained.

"Users can click to upload a medical file, find analyses, and choose a language—the document is then analyzed. In 60 seconds, three models work in the background," he added.

The application allows users to upload analysis results from both private and public clinics, interprets them, and provides a clear assessment of their health.

"If a user wants to upload more documents, they can create a comprehensive database. When they interact with the chatbot, it references their entire medical history. The most challenging aspect for us was developing the three AI models that power Cindi," Traian noted.

Traian has plans to further develop the AI medical assistant.

"Users want Cindi to be able to generate reports for doctors. Many have requested that doctors be able to access and review the analyses, and we are committed to developing this feature," he mentioned.

Shortly after its launch, the application attracted over a thousand users, with its development supported by a grant of approximately 400,000 lei from the Organization for Entrepreneurship Development.
