Expanding farmers’ access to financing – the new priority in Moldova’s cooperation with the EBRD

Enhancing access to financing for farmers will be a new priority for collaboration between the Republic of Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This initiative complements ongoing projects to modernize irrigation systems and aims to improve productivity while strengthening the resilience of the agricultural sector, which is a cornerstone of the national economy.

The topic was discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and Giuseppe Grimaldi, the Head of EBRD Operations in the Republic of Moldova. The officials reviewed progress on implementing joint projects and agreed on priorities for the upcoming period.

Prime Minister Munteanu emphasized the importance of collaboration with the EBRD in promoting sustainable development and strengthening the country's economy.

"The financial assistance and expertise provided by the EBRD significantly contribute to the modernization of our infrastructure and enhance the competitiveness of our economy. We share a strong partnership and a common vision. By working together to implement the Growth Plan for Moldova, we will be able to align the country more closely with European standards," declared the Prime Minister.

During the discussions, they reviewed the progress of 67 projects currently being executed with EBRD support, focusing on key areas such as modernizing road and rail infrastructure, enhancing energy interconnections, improving energy efficiency, ensuring the security of natural gas supply, and upgrading waste management systems. Notable projects include the rehabilitation and expansion of the M2 Chisinau Ring Road, the modernization of the Chisinau–Leuseni road, the construction of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line, and improvements to centralized heat supply systems in Balti and Chisinau.

Giuseppe Grimaldi, who became Head of EBRD Operations in Moldova on October 1, 2025, reiterated the institution’s commitment to continuing to support structural reforms and strategic investments.

Since beginning its operations in the Republic of Moldova in 1992, the EBRD has invested over 2.8 billion euros in 188 projects, contributing to infrastructure development, job creation, and economic growth in the country.
