Ukrainian Ambassador to Chisinau: “Moldova and Ukraine are advancing toward EU membership together”

The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are progressing together on the path to European integration. The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Moldova, Paun Rohovei, stated in the "La 360 de grade" show on Radio Moldova that Ukraine is a consistent partner in supporting Chisinau's European aspirations.
The ambassador highlighted that the outcome of the recent elections in the Republic of Moldova confirms a pro-European stance. He stated, "The European future of the Republic of Moldova is not only in the interest of the Ukrainian authorities but also in the interest of the Ukrainian state. Furthermore, it aligns with Ukraine's national interests."
Additionally, the diplomat praised the civic maturity of the people of Moldova, saying, "The citizens of the Republic of Moldova have shown both political and social maturity."*
Economic cooperation, energy, and infrastructure
Rohovei announced a commitment to the continuity and deepening of bilateral projects, particularly in the areas of the economy, energy, and infrastructure.
"We will ensure continuity by enhancing specific areas. We discussed resuming the activities of the joint intergovernmental commission for economic and trade cooperation," he stated.
In the energy sector, the diplomat highlighted the advantage of synchronization with the European system, mentioning that "both the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have already connected to the European energy system."
Regarding the Cosăuți–Iampol bridge, the ambassador described the project as "strategic and of great importance for both states," while also acknowledging financing challenges: "One financing channel has ceased, but there are alternative options. Colleagues from both governments are working to identify the most suitable source."
Moldova's Presidency of the Council of Europe and support for Ukraine
Commenting on the Republic of Moldova's assumption of the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Ambassador Rohov highlighted the continuous support provided to Ukraine.
"The Republic of Moldova has consistently stood by Ukraine, not just through statements, but also through concrete actions. During the refugee crisis and in the energy sector, there were times when we exported electricity to Ukraine, even during wartime," recalled Ambassador Rohov.
European Integration together
In the same program, the ambassador reaffirmed the close coordination between the two capitals on EU matters: "Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova form a tandem. We are moving forward simultaneously."
Regarding the possibility of a "decoupling" of Chișinău from Kyiv in the accession process, Ambassador Paun Rohova emphasized that, at political level, "we have decided to proceed in tandem." He is confident that "this path will continue."
Ambassador Rohova also mentioned that Ukraine is engaging in dialogue with Hungary, a country that opposes Kyiv's accession to the EU.
"There is nothing impossible if you aspire to achieve a noble goal," the diplomat said.
Transnistrian region: Manageable risk, "5+2" format exhausted
In discussing the security risk in the Transnistrian region, Rokhovei noted that "any territorial unit that is not controlled poses some danger." However, he emphasized that this does not mean we should exaggerate the threat. "Chisinau is very well prepared, and Ukraine is with us," the Ukrainian ambassador stated during a show on Moldova 1 TV.
He also mentioned that the "5+2" negotiation format has become "exhausted and ineffective."
The ambassador believes the European Union could play a crucial role in resolving the Transnistrian conflict, asserting that it is "absolutely possible" to do so without the Russian Federation's involvement.
He outlined two essential conditions for the demilitarization of the region: "First, the evacuation of Russian troops. Second, the transformation of the peacekeeping mission from a military force to a civilian one, along with the controlled destruction of ammunition stored in the Cobasna depots."
Refugees "At Home" in the Republic of Moldova
Ambassador Rohovei expressed gratitude to the Moldovan authorities and society for their support of refugees.
"They feel at home, and we greatly appreciate everything they are offered here," he stated, estimating the number of refugees at "approximately 100,000 people."
Regarding education in Ukrainian, the ambassador mentioned concrete plans to open classes.
"There are specific plans, and you will see them soon; there is full openness," he emphasized, while also highlighting the need to train teachers.
War and sanctions
During discussions about the war in Ukraine, the ambassador remarked that "a criminal only stops when he is stopped," emphasizing that sanctions are "very effective," although an authoritarian regime "will not recognize this."
He condemned the deportation of children from the occupied territories, stating, "There are several tens of thousands of children... we are taking international measures... including through Chișinău."
The Ukrainian ambassador also reaffirmed that the relationship between Chișinău and Kyiv is founded on mutual trust, strategic partnership, and shared goals of European integration. Both governments will continue to prioritize bilateral projects in energy, infrastructure, and education, as well as cooperation in managing regional security, all within the context of ongoing dialogue and mutual support in light of regional challenges.
