Moldova loses $170 million final IMF tranche after program expires
The Republic of Moldova will not receive the final IMF tranche of approximately $170 million (equivalent to about 2.9 billion lei).
The funds were not disbursed because, over the current year, there were no assessment missions, and the Moldova financing program expired on October 15, according to Minister of Finance, Andrian Gavriliță.
In his statement, Gavriliță confirmed the lapse: "In 2025, there were no further scheduled program reviews. Consequently, the tranche was not unlocked."
However, the minister underscored that this non-disbursement did not create a financial gap, citing that "it was a year in which we had sufficient resources," pointing to a budget rectification that includes a 300 million lei reduction in debt servicing costs.
Looking ahead, Gavriliță confirmed that "preliminary discussions with the IMF are underway," noting that the Fund will dispatch a mission in December "to discuss the plan for potential cooperation." The Minister made these comments on November 12, before the Government meeting.
Out of the total non-disbursed amount, 1 billion lei was earmarked for programs under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).
An additional 1.8 billion lei was allocated for the program financed through the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).
In a comment provided to Mold-Street, the International Monetary Fund explained that the primary reasons for the non-disbursement of the final tranche were the delayed implementation of the government's fiscal commitments and broader governance issues.
