Swine fever and rabies outbreaks confirmed in several localities; ANSA also warns of bird flu risk

Since the beginning of November, one outbreak of swine fever and two outbreaks of rabies were reported in the Republic of Moldova.

The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) has confirmed an outbreak of African swine fever in a domestic pig located in Bumbata, Ungheni district. The previously reported outbreak in Orhei district was eradicated.

Additionally, specialists have identified rabies outbreaks in a fox in Teșcureni, Ungheni district, and in a cat in Bălceana, Hâncești district.

ANSA also highlights that several countries in the region have reported outbreaks of avian influenza. Consequently, bird breeders and owners are urged to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures.

Experts advise keeping birds indoors to prevent them from roaming freely outside and drinking from lakes, rivers, or other water sources that wild birds can access. They recommend limiting the access of ducks and geese to these water bodies. Additionally, it is important to store bird feed in enclosed spaces to avoid contact with sparrows, pigeons, or crows.
