Chișinău and Lisbon strengthen dialogue on Moldova’s European integration

Portugal has reaffirmed its strong support for the Republic of Moldova's European path and appreciates the progress made by the authorities in Chișinău. This message was conveyed on Friday, October 14, by Inês Domingos, the Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal, who is currently on an official visit to the Republic of Moldova.

Ines Domingos met in Chișinău with Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov to discuss the latest developments in the Republic of Moldova's European agenda. This conversation was informed by the recent Enlargement Report approved by the European Commission and outlined the steps that Chișinău is expected to take in the coming months.

“First of all, I would like to congratulate the Republic of Moldova on its recent elections and reiterate Portugal’s support for the enlargement of the European Union, including the accession of the Republic of Moldova. Portugal is committed to assisting the Republic of Moldova in its ambitions to become a member state of the European Union,” Ines Domingos stated during a joint press conference with Deputy Prime Minister Cristina Gherasimov.

She emphasized that Portugal's experience, as it approaches 30 years since joining the EU next year, can serve as a valuable example for the Republic of Moldova.

"Accession was a catalyst for our economic growth when we became part of the European Union market, which at that time was less integrated than it is today. Now, the European Union's single market offers even more benefits and opportunities," said Ines Domingos.

The Portuguese official emphasized the significant progress made by the Republic of Moldova in recent years.

"What Moldova has achieved in terms of European integration has been exceptional, both through the efforts of the Government and the contributions of its citizens. Over the past three years, there have been noticeable, substantial changes. This represents a considerable success in that regard," remarked the Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal.

She also encouraged Chisinau to continue with its institutional reforms, acknowledging that these efforts require time and perseverance.

"Institutional reform does not happen overnight. At times, progress may be slow, and there might be setbacks, but it is essential to keep your sights on the horizon and continue moving forward," Ines Domingos stressed.

Gherasimov: “Portugal has consistently shown solidarity and friendship towards the Republic of Moldova”

Cristina Gherasimov, the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, expressed her gratitude to Portugal for its unwavering support of the Republic of Moldova's European aspirations and for its genuine friendship with the country.

During their discussions, Gherasimov highlighted opportunities for Moldova to learn from Portugal’s experience in reforms related to modernization, the rule of law, justice, and strengthening public administration.

"We discussed the government's priorities for the next four years in our journey toward EU accession and the benefits this will bring to our citizens—whether related to modernization, economic growth, strengthening the rule of law, judicial reforms, or building a robust European public administration. We also explored how Moldova can draw on Portugal's experience, as it successfully underwent similar processes years ago and continues to achieve notable results from which we can benefit," the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

Gherasimov also thanked the Portuguese authorities for their assistance in organizing polling stations for the diaspora, stating, "The Moldovan community in Portugal is well integrated, appreciated in the host country, and serves as an important link between our nations."
