Chișinău supports over 50,000 Ukrainian refugees

Chișinău has become the city hosting the largest number of people who have fled the war in Ukraine.

Over 50,000 individuals benefiting from temporary protection currently reside in the capital. To address this influx, the municipality has launched the campaign "Chișinău – the city that unites," highlighting how the capital provides a safe and accessible place where tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees can find support and vital services, including education.

Currently, 50,490 people under temporary protection live in Chișinău, accounting for over 60% of all Ukrainian refugees in Moldova. This number includes 10,784 children and young people, a significant portion of whom are already integrated into the municipal education system.

Specifically, 1,776 students attend 56 local schools, while 506 young children are enrolled in 62 kindergartens. These figures vividly illustrate that 2,282 children participate daily in school activities, educational programs, and other services identical to those offered to Chișinău's local children.

The refugees are spread across all sectors of the city. The highest concentration is in Botanica, registering 10,621 people, followed by Center (6,684), Râșcani (6,474), Buiucani (5,228), and Ciocana (3,724). An additional 17,759 people are settled in the suburbs and urban areas outside the central sectors. In total, the city hosts people of all ages: 36,056 adults and 3,650 seniors.

The campaign aims to naturally showcase how community relations have developed, how children have integrated into kindergartens and schools, and how many adults have successfully secured employment or accessed support programs. This initiative will feature stories, videos, and practical information, running from November 15 to December 15 on the municipality’s official channels.

Through this effort, Chișinău is sending a powerful message of normalcy: a city can function and develop successfully when it prioritizes people—whether they are long-time locals or have arrived seeking refuge in a time of crisis.
