Craiova and Sibiu Christmas Markets officially open in Romania

Romania's first major Christmas Markets have officially opened their doors in Craiova and Sibiu, drawing large crowds and sparking significant interest across the country.

In both cities, thousands of visitors attended the openings, marking the start of the winter holiday season with light installations, music, and traditional seasonal food and drink.

In central Craiova, an estimated 100,000 visitors gathered in the city centre. The event featured the highly anticipated arrival of Santa Claus, immediately followed by a large fireworks show. Activities for families included dedicated children's workshops, a carousel, a sleigh-themed ride, and an ice rink. The overall decor and festive atmosphere were well-received by attendees.

"This year we have more surprises," announced Craiova Mayor Lia Olguța Vasilescu, quoted by Digi24. "We have introduced artificial snow, as we felt this was an element missing from the Craiova Christmas Market. Santa Claus also returned this year on his sleigh and on the zip line."

The market’s growing reputation is driving an unprecedented surge in tourism: accommodation in the city is reported to be nearly fully booked, with nightly rates ranging from 700 to 1,500 lei (RON). To manage the influx of tourists, the city has allocated over one thousand pay-for-use parking spaces at the local airport.

Meanwhile, the Sibiu Christmas Market, located in the historic Great Square (Piața Mare), has become a primary attraction of the season. It features over 120 wooden stalls selling traditional treats, seasonal hot beverages, and locally produced artisan crafts.

"In the centre, we have a food court and entertainment zone, a permanent stage, a large panoramic wheel, a Santa-themed installation, the children's workshop, and the ice rink," explained event organiser Andrei Drăgan.

The opening events signal the beginning of a period where Romanian cities anticipate a boost in cultural and economic activity. The Craiova and Sibiu Christmas Markets will operate until January 4, inviting both residents and international tourists to experience the local winter traditions.
