Soroca Fortress hosts large exhibition of exotic birds and pets

Pigeons, canaries, and other exotic birds were the central attraction at the recent bird and animal exhibition held at Soroca Fortress.

Hundreds of visitors, including children and adults, admired the variety of species on display, with some attendees purchasing rare specimens. Pet breeders emphasized that their involvement, while not highly lucrative, provides significant personal satisfaction.

Many pigeon breeders attended the event, sharing stories of how their passion for the birds began in childhood.

"I travelled from Edineț, bringing several breeds, including Pouters and tumblers," one breeder explained. "This has been a lifelong commitment; I've kept them since I was a child. That's where it all started—with this passion."

Another participant noted, "We came from Măgdăcești with our pigeons. It is purely a family hobby that we engage in with the children."

One exhibitor, Marius, displayed two laughing doves (Spilopelia senegalensis), species known for their melodious cooing. Due to the cold weather, however, visitors were unable to hear their characteristic song.

"These laughing doves are mainly decorative and must be housed in an aviary or cage, similar to parrots," Marius said. "The males have a fascinating call that truly resembles a human laugh."

In a more practical approach, other bird breeders chose to exhibit Kholmogory geese, which are prized for their juicy, dietetic meat.

"I breed them myself," a farmer stated. "I have limited experience, relying mostly on research and observing Russian and Ukrainian specialists. The Kholmogory is identifiable by its large head and long, thin neck."

Another local from Drochia has successfully transformed his interest into a profitable side business. "I brought chickens, rabbits, and Greek species. I maintain a flock of 30 chickens at home, and I sell some here."

Rabbit breeders also drew considerable public interest.

"This is Budulai, a fine, young rabbit," a breeder introduced. "He is a year and a half old."

Many visitors left with new companions.

"I am a rabbit enthusiast, and I came specifically to buy rabbits for myself," one visitor shared.

Another commented, "I purchased a parrot. I already have one parrot at home, and I wanted to ensure he had a companion."

In total, 700 bird and animal breeders participated in the well-attended exhibition.
