Moldova issues Yellow Code warning as first snow arrives

The first snow of the season fell across the Republic of Moldova during the night of 18-19 November, marking the onset of winter.

Residents in several districts, including the capital, Chișinău, quickly documented the initial snowfall on social media.

In response to the sudden change in weather, municipal authorities confirmed that specialist services were deployed overnight to clear sidewalks and prevent snow accumulation. Operating under a national Yellow Code warning, crews worked continuously across affected areas and continue to do so where required.

Chișinău City Hall is urging residents to prioritise public transport. It is also advising drivers to avoid parking on the sides of streets, on sidewalks, or directly beneath older trees. This measure is crucial to ensure clearing equipment can operate efficiently and to minimise the risk of incidents. Citizens facing problematic situations should contact the Municipal Central Dispatch on (022) 22-22-67, (022) 22-26-04, or the emergency number 112.

The State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS) had issued the Yellow Code warning for complicated weather conditions on Tuesday, effective for 19 November (03:00–12:00 local time). The alert forecasts mixed precipitation nationwide: sleet and snow in the north and central regions, rain in the south, and an isolated risk of black ice.

The SHS confirmed it is monitoring the weather evolution and that the warning map will be updated if conditions intensify. Affected zones are marked on the institution's official map.
