Five tons of candy seized at the border for containing hazardous substances

Five tons of unsafe candy will no longer be sold in the Moldovan market. This batch of sweets was intercepted at the border following an inspection by the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA). The inspection revealed the presence of titanium dioxide in the candies, a food additive that is banned in the Republic of Moldova.
Due to health risks associated with certain content, ANSA has announced that the candies will either be destroyed or returned to the manufacturer.
Specialists indicate that titanium dioxide (colorant E171) is used as a pigment to achieve a white color in various confectionery products, including cakes, desserts, ice cream, biscuits, chocolate bars, bakery items, and food supplements.
Starting in 2022, the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) declared titanium dioxide to be dangerous for consumption and prohibited its use in food products.
The Republic of Moldova has aligned itself with this recommendation and implemented it as of March 7, 2024.
