Mayor of Tudora, mother of eight: “I taught them, above all, to be humane”

The mayor of Tudora village in the Ștefan Vodă district, Veronica Mocan, is a farmer by profession and a mother of eight children. She emphasizes that maintaining a balance between family and public responsibilities requires years of discipline, hard work, and values instilled in her children from an early age. The most important lesson she imparts is the significance of "being human."

In an interview with Radio Moldova, Veronica Mocan, the mayor, discussed her experiences as a mother of eight children and how her daily responsibilities have changed as they have matured. “They are already grown up; I only have one child living at home—a 15-year-old girl. Three of my children are in medical school in Chisinau, three are studying in Romania, and I have another daughter who is older. I am also now a grandmother,” she shared.

When asked about her children's intentions to return to the Republic of Moldova, Veronica Mocan mentioned that they are cautiously assessing the situation in the country. “I tell myself, ‘Let’s see how things develop. If there’s something to come back to, let’s return, but we don’t want to be without jobs,’” she explained. However, she encourages them, believing that well-prepared young people can find their purpose at home. “We hope they return because I really want my children to be here in our country,” the mayor expressed.

In raising her children, she emphasized the importance of moral values over professional or material achievements. “I taught them, first and foremost, to be honest. Whatever they do, it should be with good intentions and for the benefit of others,” she emphasized.

Veronica Mocan reflected on the challenges of raising eight children but described the experience as incredibly fulfilling. “Of course, it is not easy with eight children, but it is beautiful. I feel rich to have eight children,” she said.

Professionally, the family has always been involved in agriculture, working together from a young age. The mayor noted that the difficulties in the agri-food market affected them all. “We would take our beautiful produce to the market, only to find it filled with imported products. We, like all the other local farmers, would get in line, and wait,” she recalled. The children learned the value of hard work and understood “the price of money” early on, she added.

For Veronica Mocan, the most important lesson she instilled in her children remains unchanged: “First and foremost, I taught them to be good people, humane.”
