Dandelion syrup: a natural “honey” that boosts immunity in the cold season

As the cold season approaches, many people are looking for natural ways to boost their immunity. One traditional remedy, often recommended by specialists, is dandelion syrup, also known as "dandelion honey." This remedy is valued for its beneficial effects on the body and is easy to prepare at home.
Dandelion syrup has been used for centuries for its therapeutic properties and can be an effective ally against seasonal colds, explains herbalist Maria Macari. She states, "Dandelion syrup, prepared at home with spring water, dandelion flowers, sugar beet, lemon juice, and lemon essential oil, helps boost immunity and relieve symptoms of seasonal colds and sore throats. It can also serve as an effective treatment to cleanse the liver."
Macari emphasizes that this preparation can be consumed both as a natural remedy and as a substitute for regular honey. She explains the preparation process, which requires careful attention, starting with harvesting the plant in the early hours of the day.
"First, the dandelion flowers should be picked by 11 or 12 at the latest, because they close after that. They should then be brought home, cleaned, and washed 2-3 times under running water before being infused," says Maria Macari.
The infusion is made by bringing spring water to a boil, then steeping the flowers for a few minutes. After this, the mixture should be left to sit overnight.
"The next day, we strain and filter the flowers from the syrup we've obtained, add sugar and lemon juice, and then boil it. I test its consistency by dropping some on a plate. When I pour it into jars, I add lemon essential oil for its antioxidant properties," she adds.
A jar of dandelion syrup typically costs at least 150 lei, but it can also be made at home using this traditional recipe.
