Moldova: Border police officer shot at Lopatnic sector

A serious, yet fortunately non-fatal, incident occurred last night in the area of the Lopatnic Border Police Sector in northern Moldova.

A duty officer was shot and wounded, in what is suspected to be a self-inflicted injury involving his service weapon.

The incident took place on December 5, around 9:30 PM. According to preliminary information, the Border Police Officer had briefly left his designated duty area. Shortly thereafter, colleagues nearby heard a gunshot.

Upon checking, they found him fallen on the ground with a wound to his jaw area, most likely caused by the service weapon. The medical team arriving at the scene immediately transported him to the hospital. Doctors have confirmed that his condition is stable and his life is not in danger.

The Border Police announced that an investigation is already underway to establish all the circumstances of the incident and the nature of the intent—whether it was an accident or a deliberate act. The institution stated it will return with further information as the investigation progresses.
