Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya honored in Germany with the prestigious Award for Democracy and the Rule of Law
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was awarded the International Prize for Democracy and the Rule of Law. The leader of Belarus's democratic forces urged for continued international support for Ukraine during a ceremony in Bonn, according to DW.
The award was presented in recognition of her exceptional contributions to building a free and democratic Belarus, as stated by the award's founders.
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya's efforts symbolize the struggle of those combating political abuses by the Belarusian authorities. She actively opposes the regime that is involved in Russia's war against Ukraine, according to the organizers.
During the ceremony in Bonn, the leader of the Belarusian democratic opposition called for continued support for Ukraine.
"Today, I urge you to support Belarus and our political prisoners... But most importantly, I ask you to support Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting for the entire continent of Europe," the politician stated. "The fates of our countries are interconnected. If Ukraine is strong and Russia is weak, it will create a window of opportunity for Belarus as well," Svetlana Tikhanovskaya emphasized.
The award was offered by the Bonn International Democracy Prize Association, established in 2007. Notably, past recipients include Czech politician Václav Havel and former European foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, as noted by DW.
