Driver attempted 5,000 lei bribe to police officer, faces fine 40 times higher

To avoid punishment after being caught with 900 packs of cigarettes without proof of origin, a 50-year-old man complicated his situation further by attempting to bribe law enforcement officers.

A driver of a Volkswagen was stopped on a road in the Râșcani district by a crew from the Nord Patrol Directorate of the National Inspectorate for Public Safety. During the stop, officers discovered 900 packs of cigarettes from various brands in the car.

The driver admitted that he did not possess any documents to prove the origin of the cigarettes. In an attempt to avoid punishment, he offered the police a bribe of 5,000 lei.

Law enforcement officials have since filed a complaint regarding the incident. The driver now faces serious consequences, including a fine that is 40 times the amount of the bribe, totaling 200,000 lei, as well as the possibility of up to six years in prison for active corruption. Additionally, the driver is under investigation for cigarette smuggling.
